Mitigating climate change effects through traditional land management practices
This programme mapped and updated information about contemporary traditional systems of land and animal management on the Soqotra Archipelago, assessing how much traditional knowledge has already been lost, which climate adaptation practices are no longer in use, and which could be revived to cope with extreme and unpredictable weather as a result of climate change. A constant theme was that the value of the outputs of the traditional system – primarily animal products – are no longer valued in the same way leading to ongoing proposals to re-value animals and the climate adaptation strategies that this would revive. Through connecting traditional knowledge to climate management, the research will make a set of recommendations for adapting to climate change in the future while adding contemporary value and maintaining traditional knowledge systems.
